Large attendance at first-ever Type 1 Diabetes Technology & Research Discovery Meeting in Galway

The first-ever Type 1 Diabetes Technology & Research Discovery Meeting organised by Diabetes Technology Network Ireland (DTN IRL), in collaboration with Diabetes Ireland, took place in Croí House, Galway on Tuesday 25th February. An audience of more than 70 people had an opportunity to learn from two excellent Galway-based speakers: Professor Derek O’Keeffe and Dr Tomás Griffin.

Doctor Griffin provided an overview of the technology available to people with diabetes in Ireland, starting from continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), insulin pumps and hybrid closed-loop systems and smart pens. Dr Griffin outlined the benefits and flaws of technology, answered multiple questions from the audience, and highlighted the opportunities that diabetes technology offers to people living with diabetes.

Professor Derek O’Keeffe provided an insight to our future with diabetes technology and discussed the impact of artificial intelligence, data expansion and robots which can change the way how diabetes care can be delivered. Professor O’Keeffe signposted the most modern diabetes technologies which may (or may not) be the next game-changers in the management of diabetes.

Madelaine Bonser from Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF – Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) summarized the most interesting ongoing research supported by the Breakthrough T1D to find the cure for diabetes.

Throughout the evening, attendees had a chance to chat with the speakers and organisers, discuss and get hands-on experience with the diabetes technologies offered by the sponsors of the event: Abbott, Air Liquide, Dexcom and Medtronic.

With the landscape of diabetes technology changing so quickly, it can be difficult to keep up to date on developments so this was a great opportunity for attendees to inform themselves about the technology and how it will enable them to manage their condition more effectively. The next meeting of the series will be held in Cork on the 25th of March 2025.
