Perception of diabetic foot ulcer care during the Covid 19 Pandemic

Name of Study

Perception of diabetic foot ulcer care during the Covid 19 Pandemic

Purpose of Study (300 words)

The aim of this study is to investigate the impact that COVID-19 had on the care of individuals who had active diabetic foot disease at the time of the COVID-19 health emergency and the lockdown measures in the Republic of Ireland that came into effect in March 2020. Through the survey, the care of people with active foot disease and their foot health/ outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic will be investigated, as well as their perceptions on the care they received, how they managed and if they have any specific recommendations for the health services in the event of further lockdowns or future pandemics. Further, through the survey we will investigate participants’ perceptions on transformation in models of care and service delivery, adoption of new technologies and new models of service innovations, including modalities such as of telehealth, that were adopted during the pandemic.

By establishing the good and bad aspects to the provision of care of diabetic foot disease during the pandemic, will enable the researcher to determine the best route and pathway of care if another lockdown were to occur. For instance, it could potentially highlight the need for a greater community input in the future to remove the need for hospital based care which, would be mutually beneficial to the patient and healthcare system and align with the goals of the Government of Ireland’s Slaintecare programme.

Specific aims include:1. To undertake a national survey to investigate the experiences and perceptions of changes to the structure of diabetic foot care during the Covid-19 pandemic and to identify areas that worked well and areas that need improving.2. To investigate opinion and experiences in regards to the foot health outcomes, specifically in relation to their DFU, during the covid-19 pandemic.3. Investigate participants’ perceptions on transformation in models of care and service delivery, adoption of new technologies and new models of service innovations, including modalities such as of telehealth, that were adopted during the pandemic.
