Access to Diabetes Technology can transform the lives of people living with Type 1 diabetes in Donegal

Recent developments in Letterkenny University Hospital should pave the way to easier access to diabetes technology, which can help people with Type 1 diabetes manage their condition more effectively.

To learn more about the various technologies, such as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), insulin pumps and hybrid closed loop systems that are currently available in Ireland, Diabetes Technology Network Ireland (DTN IRL), in collaboration with Diabetes Ireland, is hosting a free technology information meeting in Mount Errigal Hotel, Letterkenny, on Thursday, 25th of September from 6.15 pm for people living with diabetes and their families.

With the landscape of diabetes technology changing so quickly, it can be difficult to keep up to date on developments, so this is a great opportunity for attendees to inform themselves about the technology and how it will enable them to manage their condition more effectively.

Dr Tomás Griffin, Consultant Physician, Galway University Hospital, who will be presenting on this important topic on the night, said “we aim to empower attendees to make informed decisions about diabetes technology in collaboration with their diabetes care team, choosing options that best meet clinical needs and lifestyle preferences”.

Ms Avril McCloskey, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Letterkenny University Hospital, who will also be speaking at the meeting, said “we are delighted to welcome DTN (Ireland) to Letterkenny and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to share some positive developments in accessing diabetes technology in LUH and I hope to see many local people with diabetes come along to the meeting”.

Attendees will also learn about the latest global Type 1 Diabetes research developments funded by Breakthrough T1D, and Dr Kate Gajewska, Manager for Research and Advocacy, will share her personal insights on the benefits of technology for those living with diabetes. Attendees will also have an opportunity to meet many of the companies providing the technology.

The meeting is one of a series of meetings being held nationwide. “Previous meetings in Galway and Cork were hugely successful, so whether you are a person living with type 1 diabetes, or a parent/carer, don’t miss the opportunity and join us on the 25th of September,” added Dr Griffin.
