A Personal Story – Eddie Phibbs

Eddie Phipps, a fit 40 year old, recently visited our Santry office in Dublin to present a cheque for €730. He raised the money while walking the length of the Grand Canal Way, a total of 120km from Lucan to Shannon Harbour in Offaly. He raised a total of €1460.

He did the walk in loving memory of his brother Jason, who died recently aged 43 years, from health complications related to Type 1 diabetes. He also walked in honour of his father who died from cancer.

His brother who was diagnosed with Type 1 at 29 years, was a fit person who loved playing football. Eddie was working outside Ireland at the time and did not experience how his brother adapted to living and managing this condition. He misses his brother deeply and decided to walk in an effort to deal with the loss and help education around diabetes. Eddie’s youngest sister Angela was diagnosed aged 6 with Type 1 Diabetes and has recently welcomed a second baby into the family.

Diabetes Ireland would like to thank Eddie for making the trip in to meet and chat with us.  We greatly appreciate his contribution which he has chosen to invest in Diabetes Education.
