Lifestyle factors and excess weight are strongly linked with the rise of Type 2 diabetes globally but you can also be slim\, fit and develop Type 2 diabetes\, typically after 40 years of age. \n“Most people are not aware of the risks and are surprised and upset when diagnosed with pre-diabetes or Type 2. They then face a challenge to learn about the condition. Education is vital and we urge Leitrim locals to engage with us and learn how to manage or avoid this condition” comments Clair Naughton\, Diabetes Nurse Specialist with Diabetes Ireland. \nDiabetes Ireland has developed a structured diabetes education programme and are running a course in Carrick on Shannon starting Tuesday 9th October. This is a free course for patients diagnosed with Pre-diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes. There are 4 sessions\, each 2 hours long – \nWeek 1: Tuesday 9th October from 10.30 am-1.00 pm \nWeek 2: Tuesday 16th October from 10.30 am-12.30 pm \nWeek 3: Tuesday 23rd October from 10.30 am-12.30 pm \nReview Session: 4 months later \nCODE is FREE of charge. \nTopics covered in CODE include diabetes explained\, risk factors\, signs and symptoms\, healthy eating\, physical activity\, personal goal setting\, complications and the necessity of regular follow up and the importance of optimal diabetes control. The six month session looks at the review of achievements and personal goal setting.
