In addition to increased rates of depression\, anxiety and eating disorder\, people with diabetes can experience psychological barriers to optimal diabetes management\, such as fear of hypoglycaemia\, needle phobia and burnout from the day-to-day demands of condition management. \nDr Doherty will address these issues and examine the evidence for an association between common mental health conditions and diabetes\, and the shared pathways for the development of these conditions. She will also touch on the latest research for the treatment of these conditions together and will outline self-help strategies which may be useful. \nDr Anne Doherty MB BCh MRCPsych MMedSc MD \nAnne was recently appointed to the newly created role of consultant liaison psychiatrist at UHG. She graduated from medicine at NUI\, Galway and completed training in psychiatry in Dublin. For nearly 4 years prior to moving to Galway\, she was Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist at King’s College Hospital\, London\, where she led the 3 Dimensions of Care for Diabetes service (3DFD)\, an award-winning multi-disciplinary team for people with poorly controlled diabetes and co-morbid psychiatric disorders. At King’s she was also involved in research developing translational medicine projects for better integration of mental and physical healthcare. Her research interests include mental disorders in the context of long term conditions especially diabetes\, and adjustment disorders. \n \nThanks to Ascensia for sponsoring the venue and refreshments.

SUMMARY:Diabetes Cliffs of Moher Walk - Sth West
DESCRIPTION:Our Diabetes Group Walk is from Doolin to the Cliffs of Moher. \nMeeting @ O’Connor’s pub carpark in Doolin for an 11am start. \nDate: Sunday 16th October @11am. \nThe branch priced a bus to transport the group back from the Cliffs but it was very expensive so they decided one car will be parked at the Cliffs before the walk and that driver will transport the other drivers back to their cars. \nDistance involved is 8km so will take approximately 2 hrs-2 hrs 30.  Please ensure you wear comfortable footwear\, warm & waterproof clothing and have fluids and snacks.  Children will also need to be well supervised during the walk as there are a few cliff edges. \nThe walk will go ahead weather permitting so if interested and you haven’t already let me know please do so as soon as possible and also give me your mobile number in case there are any changes on the day.  The Cliff Path Safety Code is below. \nNotice by Olivia\, Carmel & Michael \nEnquiries to – livsweeney75@gmail.com\nCliff Path Safety Code\n1. Keep to the official path\, away from cliff edges and overhangs.\n2. Always supervise children\, especially near cliff edges.\n3. Be aware that weather conditions can change suddenly. Strong onshore wind can suddenly change to off-shore as the wind eddies on the higher sections of the cliff. Heavy fog is common and results in extremely poor visibility.\n4. Apply the principles of Leave No Trace and The Burren Code by being well prepared for your walk\, following trail notices\, taking home your rubbish and minimizing your impact on the environment. This walking trail has been developed with kind assistance of local landowners and organisations. Please respect these landowners\, their fencing\, and their livestock\, by parking in designated areas only\, and staying on the official trail. No dogs allowed. \n
