SUMMARY:CLARE - Type 1 Diabetes Meet up
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ray O’Connor\, GP – Type 1 Diabetes & Heart Disease \nThe Clare Diabetes Support group have organised a Diabetes Information Meeting titled “Type 1 Diabetes & Heart Disease” in the Temple Gate Hotel\, Ennis\, Co. Clare on Tuesday\, 21st February at 8pm. \nPeople with type 1 diabetes have an increased risk of heart failure\, according to a Swedish study published online September 18 2015 in medical publication; Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology. Type 1 diabetes puts patients at  risk for heart disease. \nGrainne Flynn\, who has lived with type 1 diabetes for 23 years and organiser of the Clare Diabetes Support groups\, says “Heart disease in people with type 1 diabetes doesn’t present with symptoms like it does in people who do not have diabetes. But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t anything you can do to prevent it! This meeting is about learning what we need to know to make sure that heart disease doesn’t catch us out and it’s also an opportunity to meet other people with diabetes.” \nOur guest speaker\, Dr Ray O’Connor\, recently retired from general practice\, was a community doctor in Limerick since 1990. He commenced his role as adjunct senior clinical lecturer at the Graduate Entry Medical School\, at UL\, where he will teach GEMS undergraduates and students at the school of paramedics. He also has served as the Chairperson of the Midwestern Diabetes Services Implementation Groups (DSIG) for almost 10 years. He will discuss what people with type 1 diabetes should be aware of to prevent heart disease. \nThe meeting is free to attend and is for people who live with type 1 diabetes (adults with type 1 and parents of children with type 1)\, but it is open to members of the public who wish to learn more about diabetes. \nThe Clare branch of Diabetes Ireland also runs diabetes support groups for all people with diabetes and their families. If you would like more information about these meetings contact Gráinne on mobile number 087 641 5747 or email clarebranchdfi@gmail.com \n

SUMMARY:Trabolgan Family Weekend
DESCRIPTION:This year’s trip to Trabolgan will take place on the weekend of Friday the 24th March to Sunday 26th March\, 2017. \nThe weekend activities will include workshops for parents and a workshop for children with diabetes. We also hope to run a workshop for siblings of children with diabetes. These will give parents an opportunity to share their experiences\, speak with medical personnel and most importantly\, to offer each other support. We will have our team leaders (many of whom have diabetes themselves)\, who will organise and supervise activities for children. \nWe have booked 28 houses for the weekend.  We do not like to refuse people\, but as you may be aware\, last year we were unable to accommodate families who left it late to book and Trabolgan had no further accommodation available. Therefore\, we will only be able to accommodate the first 28 families\, who book with full payment. We may  not be able to extend this number as we get closer to the event. \nFamilies will be accommodated in self-catering apartments. Chestnut Type houses sleep 4-5 people and cost €275. Forest Oak houses sleep 6-7 people and cost €340. These prices include the use of the swimming pool\, sports centre\, crazy golf\, indoor and outdoor play centres and night entertainment. We have booked 20 chestnut houses and 8 forest oak houses. Bookings will be taken on a first come-first served basis. Therefore it is essential that we receive  full payment by Friday 24th February 2017. Please return the accompanying booking form by Friday 24th. \nPlease Note: Staff at Trabolgan will not enter negotiations regarding refunds if families are unable to attend. They advise that insurance be taken out (at a cost of €11.50 per person) to cover cancellation\, luggage and personal protection. Insurance forms will be issued with acknowledgement of payments for weekend trip received by the S.K. Club. \nWe hope you will be able to join us. \n  \nMairead Fanning \nSweetpea Kidz Club Coordinator \n  \n

SUMMARY:Limerick Talk - Prepping for Sport with Type 1
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday May 16th we will have an evening entitled ‘Prepping for Sport with T1’ with George Clancy (International Referee)  and Michael Murphy.  Both George and Michael will show some of the techniques they use to allow them to function at a high level whether on days when one is referring a world cup match or sitting at the desk as an accountant or mountaineering both local and abroad. \n  \nEmma Tester\, BSc Sport and Exercise\, Nutrition is helping George and Michael with the night.  Emma is the nutritionist with the Munster Rugby team and will give us some of the nutritional plans of the players.  Apparently CJ Stander and Keith Earls like a bowl of porridge before matches.  She will also help with some of the dangers of high intensity training. \n  \nVenue for this event is Thomond Park and again we will need numbers as soon as possible as places are very limited for this event due to the size of the room we have so it will have to be on a first come\, first serve basis. \nWe would also like to take this opportunity\, on behalf of the group\, to thank Catherine Dooley and UL Arena for very kindly giving us a pitch for the Diabetes Ireland / Munster Rugby Training Day on April 19th.  For a group who do not fund-raise we have been so lucky with the calibre of people who help us out which we are so very grateful for. \n  \nEmail: livsweeney75@gmail.com
