SUMMARY:Film Screening in Galway "Bittersweet"
DESCRIPTION:  \nTuesday 14th of November is World Diabetes Day and in honour of this Galway City of Film and CÚRAM\, the Science Foundation Centre for Research In Medical Devices\, in NUI Galway are releasing a short promo for ‘Bittersweet –The Rise of Diabetes’\, the upcoming Science on Screen documentary. \n  \nBittersweet (2017) | Trailer from Invisible Thread on Vimeo. \nBittersweet – The Rise of Diabetes is a half-hour film directed by Hugh Rodgers and produced by both Anna Rodgers and Zlata Filipovic of Invisible Thread Films. The film captures the Irish health system’s fight to treat the rising number of diabetic patients\, and warns against this troubling epidemic facing our population. It follows the personal stories of young people who are living with diabetes and their daily struggle to manage it. \nDiabetes\, a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas is no longer able to make insulin\, or when the body cannot make good use of the insulin it produces\, leads to raised glucose levels in the blood\, known as hyperglycaemia and in time to damage and failure of various organs and tissues. \nOver the course of the documentary\, we also discover ground breaking research and development in pharmacology and biomedical science\, capturing the important work of CÚRAM’s Prof David Brayden and his team at UCD’s Veterinary Hospital\, where they are developing new ways of delivering insulin to the body. \nWorld Diabetes Day is commemorated yearly by the International Diabetes Federation; an umbrella organization of over 230 national diabetes associations in 170 countries. It represents the interests of the growing number of people with diabetes and their vision to live in a world without the disease and they work to promote diabetes care\, prevention and cure worldwide. Galway City of Film and CÚRAM are glad to join with the IDF to mark this important day. \nBittersweet – The Rise of Diabetes is the 2017 recipient of the Science on Screen commission\, an initiative by Galway Film Centre with CÚRAM\, the Science Foundation Centre for Research In Medical Devices\, in NUI Galway. The documentary will have its premiere screening during Science Week\, as part of the Galway Science & Technology Festival on Saturday 25th November at An Taibhdhearc Theatre in Galway. The screening is FREE but tickets need to be booked through Eventbrite \nAll welcome! \n#GalwayCityofFilm #lovescience
