SUMMARY:WESTPORT\, Co Mayo – Type 2 Diabetes Education (CODE)
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCODE is Diabetes Ireland’s  group education programme for people with Type 2 Diabetes or diagnosed Pre-diabetes.  CODE aims to deliver general information about diabetes self-management in a local community group setting. CODE allows people with diabetes to talk in a supportive atmosphere about their own diabetes. Time is allocated during the programme for problem solving\, feedback on diabetes self management behaviours and goal setting. \nThe programme is facilitated by Clair Naughton\, Diabetes Nurse Specialist and consists of 4 sessions of 2 hour duration  The first 3 sessions take place over 3 consecutive weeks \nThis event is now fully booked  \nFinal Review Meeting \nThis review session takes place six months after the start date. \nCODE is free of charge. \nTopics covered in CODE include diabetes explained\, risk factors\, signs and symptoms\, healthy eating\, physical activity\, personal goal setting\, complications and the necessity of regular follow up and the importance of optimal diabetes control. The six month session looks at the review of achievements and personal goal setting. DESCRIPTION:Type 2 Diabetes – Is it preventable? \nHow to reduce your risk \n  \nA free information meeting for Clare people at risk of developing type 2 diabetes is taking place in Temple Gate Hotel\, Ennis\, Co. Clare on Tuesday\, 27th March 2018 from 7:30 – 9pm. \n  \nThe evening will focus on risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes\, how to reduce one’s own risk\, and how to put current dietary guidelines into practice. \n  \nPauline Dunne\, Senior Dietitian with Diabetes Ireland will provide realistic\, safe\, practical effective and sustainable nutritional information tailored giving participants a full understanding of food from a balanced point of view which can be easily applied when they return home. This will include: \n  \n\nUnderstanding the core principals of food\, nutrition and healthy eating in line with Healthy Food for Life and the food pyramid.\nUnderstand how diet and nutrition links to type 2 diabetes\, pre-diabetes\nUnderstand how to reduce risk of developing type 2 diabetes\, pre-diabetes\nPortion control\, with rule of thumb simple guidelines for people of all shapes and sizes.\n\n  \nThroughout the workshop there will be opportunity to ask questions about diet\, habits and potential food related myths. \n  \n“Our portion sizes\, and the frequency to which we consume ‘treat’ foods has increased dramatically over the last 10 years and where fizzy drinks and sweet foods are the obvious culprits\, many people are not aware of many other foods which are contributing to our weight gain\, and ultimately our risk of developing type 2 diabetes’” said Pauline. \n  \nGrainne Flynn\, secretary of the Clare branch of Diabetes Ireland and a person who has lived with diabetes for 25 years says “We welcome all who would like to learn more about what type 2 diabetes is. We especially want to raise more awareness of ALL the risk factors of type 2 diabetes.
