Prof. Dinneen served as Head of the School of Medicine in NUI Galway from 2013 to 2016. In June 2016 he was appointed National Lead for the Diabetes Clinical Programme of the HSE’s Clinical Strategy and Programmes Division.
Does Ireland need a Diabetes Register?
Prof. Dinneen discusses the exciting role that Information Technology (IT) will play in Diabetes Care in Ireland. IT will properly integrate care between the hospital and the community providing knowledge of the entire population of people with diabetes and sharing information easily across interfaces. His professional interests include developing and evaluating programmes of self-management education and support for people living with diabetes, developing optimal models of community-based diabetes care and understanding the diabetic foot.
Having graduated from University College Cork Medical School he spent a period of postgraduate training in the USA, Canada and the UK before returning to Ireland in 2005. He is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate education through the College of Medicine Nursing and Health Sciences at NUI Galway and has had much success in securing research funding. He is Clinical Lead for Schwartz Rounds in Galway University Hospitals. He was part of successful bids which brought a School of Podiatry and a Clinical Research Facility to NUI Galway. A general practitioner in Banagher Co. Offaly, Dr Velma Harkins has long had an interest in the care of patients with type 2 diabetes. She was instrumental in setting up the Midlands Diabetes Structured Care Programme in 1998, which has been at the forefront of developing a successful model for structured Primary Care diabetes management for patients with type 2 diabetes. Author of the ICGP/HSE National Guidelines Practical Guide to Integrated Type 2 Diabetes Care in 2008, she was appointed to the Expert Advisory Group on Diabetes in 2009 and thereafter was appointed National GP Lead for Diabetes in 2010 and was author of Chronic Disease Watch Type 2 Diabetes in 2012. She has recently authored the updated the national diabetes guidelines A Practical Guide to Integrated Type 2 Diabetes Care which was published in early 2016. She is a GP Trainer involved in both under-graduate and post-graduate GP training, and is chairman of the National Association of Trainers in General Practice. She is the current chair of the Quality and Standards Committee of the ICGP.
